Comme des Garçons Store Opening Invitation
Promotional mailer/invite announcing the opening of the Comme des Garçons SHIRT store in New York on August 1988. The invite consists of two pieces: a translucent page with store location marked on a street map, and a solid page with the store date, phone and address.
The Comme des Garçons SHIRT store was designed to sell only shirts, the most ancient garment of mankind. The fixtures used for hanging and displaying the shirts evoke the shape of the human rib cage, while the architectural details of the store are inspired by stitching techniques. The ceiling panels are centralized, as in the construction of a shirtfront placket.
The front gate of Comme des Garçons SHIRT is closed at night in lieu of traditional security gates. This gridded façade opens during the day to reveal another entrance of glass, thus creating two distinct storefronts for day and night. The two façades also help to shorten the length of the shop’s unusually long space.
